49ers UDFA No. 3: OL Jason Poe

San Francisco was lucky enough to keep one of its strongest positional groups, the offensive line, together for quite a long time.

However, after last season’s end, the current state of the O-line is shaky at best.

Alex Mack decided to call it a career, and Laken Tomlinson signed a sizable contract with the New York Jets. Not to mention, the 49ers lost formidable depth with Tom Compton fleeing for the Denver Broncos.

So, now what?

As mentioned earlier, the Niners could put all their stock in Aaron Banks. He saw limited action last year and is pegged to start in the upcoming season in Tomlinson’s stead.

Or they could kick the tires on undrafted rookie Jason Poe.

At 6-foot-1 and 300 pounds, Poe is an immovable object. But given his pro-day numbers, he’s proven to be more than just a book-end.

With 34 reps on the bench press, he’s proven that strength is undoubtedly his asset. However, given his measurables and after clocking a 4.89 40-yard dash and registering a 31.5-inch vertical jump, Poe is a physical freak.

It’s a bit early to award him the starting job based on his numbers, but as the upcoming season draws near, Poe should prove that his going undrafted was certainly a fluke.

In fact, San Francisco should consider itself blessed to have Poe on the roster for two reasons. One, he was practically gift wrapped and sent to Santa Clara. And two, it cost them nothing by the way of draft capital to attain him.
