49ers position No. 2: Running back

Players on roster: Tyrion Davis-Price*, JaMycal Hasty, Josh Hokit, Kyle Juszczyk, Jordan Mason*, Elijah Mitchell, Trey Sermon, Jeff Wilson Jr.

The 49ers didn’t have to draft a running back this year but elected to do so anyway, making a surprise move by grabbing Tyrion Davis-Price out of LSU towards the end of Round 3.

While this was initially looked at as a vote of no confidence in last year’s third-round pick, Trey Sermon, it seems a bit premature the Niners are willing to give up on the former Ohio State rusher so quickly after just one disappointing season.

Davis-Price’s presence does, however, spell some danger for some of the deeper running backs on the roster, particularly JaMycal Hasty and, to a lesser extent, Jeff Wilson Jr.

San Francisco probably keeps four halfbacks, meaning one of the three aforementioned names has to go, assuming second-year pro Elijah Mitchell isn’t going anywhere and everyone stays healthy between now and the regular season. Yet the depth chart could receive a serious shakeup in the wake of undrafted rookie Jordan Mason performing so well during organized team activities.

Is it possible Mason is the latest in a long line of hidden gems at running back who seemingly come out of nowhere to earn significant roles?

If so, the 49ers may be coerced into parting ways with higher-profile players to keep the UDFA around.
