49ers free-agent target No. 2: EDGE Trey Flowers

Just when you think you’ve got enough pass-rushers, go out and land another. That’s what smart teams do.

The 49ers, of course, have a quality array of pass-rushers, led by EDGE Nick Bosa and supplemented by the Round 2 NFL Draft addition of former USC edge rusher Drake Jackson this year. Tack on returning veterans like Samson Ebukam and Jordan Willis, it’s not hard to see why this particular unit is so deep entering 2022.

And there will be notable players from this crop who don’t survive roster cuts.

That said, adding an experienced pass-rusher to pair with Bosa, potentially upgrade over Ebukam and ensure Jackson doesn’t have too much pressure placed on him right away would be a smart move.

So, why not go after former Detroit Lions EDGE Trey Flowers?

Admittedly, Flowers’ three years in Detroit were an awful disappointment after kicking off such a promising career with the Patriots. With injuries getting in the way, Flowers appeared in only 27 games over three seasons with the Lions where he recorded a mere 10.5 sacks, five forced fumbles and 12 tackles for a loss, a far cry from his Pats heyday.

That said, the soon-to-be 29-year-old Flowers would likely come on the cheap and could certainly enjoy a better surrounding context within the Niners’ confines.
