49ers OTAs: These 5 players aren’t off to a hot start
By Peter Panacy
No. 1: 49ers safety George Odum
Remember that part about Dontae Johnson? Check out one breakdown from Eric Branch:
"Johnson looked comfortable at his new [free safety] spot Wednesday. He jumped a short route by tight end Tanner Hudson and snagged quarterback Nate Sudfeld’s pass for a would-be pick-six. Later, after he chased Sudfeld out of bounds on a scramble, he reminded the QB about the interception with some good-natured trash talk."
The Niners have primarily lined up second-year pro Talanoa Hufanga opposite Jimmie Ward for the starting safety tandem, while Johnson has been getting a lot of work with the second-team unit.

His counterpart, George Odum, hasn’t exactly wowed in coverage despite San Francisco picking him up in free agency after his four years with the Indianapolis Colts.
Odum, like Oren Burks, cut his teeth as a special teams ace. And it’s also starting to make sense why Indy didn’t experiment much with Odum as a regular defensive player.
The veteran wasn’t particularly impressive in Week 1 of OTAs in coverage, and it’s beginning to look like Hufanga and Johnson might be ahead of Odum in the defensive pecking order.
