No. 1: 49ers trade Deebo Samuel to Jets

The New York Jets were one of those teams hot on the trail of Deebo Samuel at the NFL Draft, and reports came back suggesting they were willing to offer San Francisco the No. 10 overall pick in addition to a day-two pick swap.

But the 49ers didn’t budge.

Gang Green aggressively went after other receivers, too, apparently being the silver medalist in the Miami Dolphins’ trade for former Kansas City Chiefs All-Pro wideout Tyreek Hill. And while New York turned the No. 10 overall pick into Ohio State wide receiver Garrett Wilson, getting some more firepower for second-year quarterback Zach Wilson has to remain a high priority for head coach Robert Saleh and Co.

If anything, Saleh and Jets offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur would love nothing more than to reunite with Samuel again, and it would be New York’s response to other teams in the AFC East stockpiling receiving weaponry, such as the Dolphins with Hill and the New England Patriots with DeVante Parker.

Saleh’s relationship with the Niners might be the only way any trade goes down, especially if San Francisco winds up giving up a 2024 second-round pick to effectively move back into Round 1 that year, while New York’s first two picks in the 2023 draft are enough to convince John Lynch to engineer a deal with his old friend.

Again, likely to happen? No. But a Samuel trade is still on the table until it’s not.
