49ers sneaky storyline No. 2: Battle of the backup QBs

Let’s face it, the only way the 49ers avert disaster if they lose their starting quarterback in 2022 because of an elongated injury is if they decide to retain the veteran, Jimmy Garoppolo.

Some have argued this, of course. But, financially speaking, keeping Garoppolo as an expensive backup to the assumed starter, Trey Lance, simply isn’t feasible. And it probably isn’t going to be in Garoppolo’s best immediate interests either.

Garoppolo isn’t at OTAs, of course, as he rehabs from offseason shoulder surgery. So it’s possible fans are already witnessing what the Niners’ 2022 regular-season quarterback room might look like:

  1. Trey Lance
  2. Nate Sudfeld
  3. Brock Purdy

Lance will draw tons of attention at OTAs, and that’s understandable. But the bout to support Lance as the No. 2 option shouldn’t go unnoticed either.

Albeit a bad example, the rookie Purdy didn’t exactly wow during rookie minicamp, but he still has an outsider’s shot at threatening Sudfeld for the immediate-backup role.

Plus, talking about rookie quarterbacks can always be fun, even if they were the final pick of the NFL Draft.
