Round 2, Pick No. 61 Overall: 49ers select S Daxton Hill, Michigan

Currently, the 49ers have four safeties under contract. Jimmie Ward continues to ascend and has yet to disappoint. Newly signed George Odum, who figures to be more of a special teams asset. Fourth-year veteran Tarvarius Moore who has never made a start, and Talanoa Hufanga has seen limited action at best.

To put it lightly, this group is shaky.

Last year’s starter, Jaquiski Tartt had a heart-breaking drop on an interception in the closing minutes of the NFC title game that many felt could’ve put the game away.

A contract extension has not been offered, and he doesn’t figure to be in the team’s plans moving forward.

Enter safety Daxton Hill.

Spending a high-pick on the former Michigan product could pay dividends for years to come. His combination of size and speed would create a mismatch in the secondary for opposing offenses. He ran a 4.38 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine, too.

However, his versatility in the secondary could prove to be his biggest attribute. In addition to playing safety, he plays cornerback and nickel as well, at the very least he could line up in the spot that was recently vacated by K’Waun Williams.

This group needs help in a big way, Hill can certainly fill that void.
