49ers prospect No. 2: WR Calvin Austin III, Memphis

Tariq Woolen could easily flirt with the 2022 mark for the fastest prospect at the scouting combine, but he’ll be challenged by another player potentially on the 49ers’ NFL Draft radar, Memphis wide receiver Calvin Austin III.

The 5-foot-9, 162-pound Austin isn’t going to win any strength awards at the combine on the bench press, and it might be a long shot for him to even make a small dent in the vertical leap.

But that’s not his game.

Simply put, Austin is electrifying with the ball in his hands, both as a receiver and punt-return specialist. And after back-to-back 1,000-yard campaigns for the Tigers, it’s time for him to put his raw speed and agility on display in front of a national audience.

A 4.3 40-yard time, which is expected, should help boost his draft stock. Yet his size and small stature are going to deter teams from spending anything more than an early day-three draft pick on him.

If the Niners want to get a complementary weapon with explosiveness to spare, they could do far worse than look at Austin.
