No. 1: Commanders may want to go younger than Jimmy Garoppolo

It’s crazy to think one of the offseason rumors out there suggested the Washington Commanders could “justify” using their first-round NFL Draft pick, No. 11 overall, in a trade with the 49ers for Jimmy Garoppolo.

Weirder things have happened, yes. But that would be a massive reach on Washington’s part.

Let’s get back to reality a bit here and suggest the Commanders would opt to dish out a second- or a third-round pick for a quarterback. And to make things even more interesting, let’s add in further reports suggesting the Packers are willing to retain Aaron Rodgers no matter what.

Meaning their first-round pick from two seasons ago, Jordan Love, will be sitting on the bench again.

Green Bay might want to bounce on that investment, and a player like Love could easily be more attractive to Washington than an aging, so-so Garoppolo with a long injury history. One could argue Love would cost the Commanders no more than Garoppolo, in terms of a trade package, and Love is still on his rookie contract for the next two years, too, with a fifth-year option still in play.

Sure, Washington would be banking on more of an unknown than Jimmy G, but it might be convinced the bolder, younger move would be a wiser long-term investment.

Again, closing one more possible landing spot for Garoppolo off the charts.
