49ers NFL Combine prospect to watch No. 4: DL Travon Walker, Georgia

San Francisco doesn’t automatically have to go with a cornerback with its first pick in the draft, and recent history under John Lynch suggests it’ll continue investing in a team strength, the defensive line, early.

It’s not without need either, as the 49ers would be wise to add another pass-rusher to pair with EDGE Nick Bosa and along the likelihood of the team bidding farewell to oft-injured EDGE Dee Ford this offseason.

Georgia defensive lineman Travon Walker might not be a slam-dunk pass-rushing prospect like Bosa was, but Walker does offer a lot of things the Niners would otherwise like.

For starters, he’s rotated between an edge rusher and an interior lineman for his collegiate career, his 6-foot-5 and 275-pound frame getting up to 295 pounds at one point, and that flexibility could help shore up rotational needs moving forward.

His production at Georgia resulted in six sacks and 7.5 tackles for a loss last season, but teams like San Francisco will want to see his agility and burst at the combine.

If those efforts are exceptional, though, it’s entirely possible Walker winds up being far out of reach from the 49ers’ vantage point.
