49ers dream target No. 3: EDGE Drake Jackson, USC

In some regards, edge rushers are kind of like the defensive equivalent of prospective quarterbacks in that teams will often reach for them well beyond where they should otherwise be selected.

USC’s EDGE, Drake Jackson, certainly falls into that category, as he’d probably hold a day-two draft grade but could feasibly end up going in Round 1 if a team is willing to overlook a relative lack of production (12.5 sacks over three collegiate years) and instead focus on his physical prowess, which consists of a wide array of pass-rushing moves, speed, quick twitch and a relentless motor.

Sometimes, those figures matter more.

The Niners may seek out a complementary pass-rusher to pair with EDGE Nick Bosa this offseason, particularly as they look to offboard oft-injured EDGE Dee Ford and may lose linemen Arden Key and Jordan Willis to free agency.

Jackson, 6-foot-5 and 255 pounds, is versatile enough to play as both a 4-3 defensive end or 3-4 outside linebacker, comfortable lining up in a three-point stance or standing up.

If Jackson falls well beyond the first round, one has to think San Francisco would be interested.
