Free agent 49ers must avoid No. 3: Cornerback Kevin King, Packers

Wow, a truly cornerback-heavy theme here. Notice a trend?

It is a position of need for San Francisco, no doubting that. The 49ers could infuse some talent and potentially look to upgrade over corners like Emmanuel Moseley and Ambry Thomas heading into 2022.

The keyword, though, is “upgrade.”

One pending free agent who would certifiably not be an upgrade is Green Bay Packers cornerback Kevin King, who might have been something of a shocking re-sign by Green Bay when he inked a one-year, $5 million deal to stick around for 2021.

King had already struggled the previous season, and many Packers fans were hoping to see him go elsewhere last offseason, understandably frustrated when he was brought back and ultimately played 10 games, starting six of them.

It wasn’t necessarily a great bounce-back campaign either, as King allowed opposing quarterbacks a 108.9 passer rating when targeting him, the highest mark King had given up over the last four seasons.

Even if the Niners were looking for back-end-of-the-roster types to beef up the depth chart, passing on King would be a wise idea.

Both in terms of free agency and what quarterbacks should do.
