49ers Target No. 5: S Kyle Hamilton, Notre Dame

It would seem beyond ludicrous that such a lauded player as Kyle Hamilton would be available for any team that picks at No. 11. It could even be said a team picking outside the top five would be lucky to have him.

But in the landscape of today’s NFL, the secondary is often cast aside for quarterbacks, tackles and edge rushers. With the tendency for quarterbacks to be overdrafted, the strong EDGE class and a couple of good tackles who could be picked in the top 10, that leaves room for someone to drop.

Hamilton looks to be an exceptional safety prospect who could be a replacement for Jaquisti Tartt if he leaves in free agency or the 49ers elect not to extend him. Hamilton also has the versatility to play in the slot if needed.

What leaps out on the tape is the fact there isn’t much in the way of weaknesses. He can play multiple schemes, he can plug the box in the run game, he can tackle, he has speed, his football IQ is off the charts.

If there is a weakness, it doesn’t show up in his film. He looks like he could be one of the best safeties in the country from Week 1.

It’s the reality of the NFL that defensive backs aren’t rated as important as other positions. But if in the extremely unlikely situation the 49ers grab No. 11 from the Washington Commanders and the also unlikely scenario Hamilton is available there.

They need to run, not walk but run, to submit their pick.
