49ers Free-Agent Target No. 4: CB Darious Williams, Rams

The one place people will be hoping the 49ers make a splash is at the cornerback position, which is easily the worst positional group on the roster.

This is some hope however for the future with Ambry Thomas showing promise. He, Emmanuel Moseley and K’Waun Williams in the slot would make for excellent starters along whenever Jason Verrett can get onto the field.

Except Verrett and Williams will be free agents this offseason, and it’s anyone’s guess whether or not San Francisco wants to bank on either one of those two staying fully healthy in 2022.

The team will still need to search for upgrades, and if the 49ers can’t find someone to splash the cash on or would rather use the money on extensions, one player who can fill the void is Darious Williams from the Rams.

The Niners are in win-now mode, so the idea of a 29-year-old defensive back coming over won’t dissuade them. Williams had a bit of a down season for Los Angeles, but he’s still an effective corner over the slot.

A reliable corner is an upgrade by default for San Francisco. Williams wouldn’t cost as much as some of the premier corners available, and the 49ers fans can be encouraged that resources are being devoted to the position.
