49ers vs. Cowboys: 5 biggest takeaways from Wild Card win
No. 5: Jimmy Garoppolo’s play will determine how far 49ers advance
The 49ers were dominating 23-10 and looking to easily advance to the divisional round until Jimmy Garoppolo threw a pitiful interception, which allowed the Cowboys to score and get back in the game.
It seems Garoppolo cannot shake those back-breaking turnovers or cannot stop missing wide-open receivers like he did when he overthrew Brandon Aiyuk late in the third quarter.
Jimmy G is beloved among players, and they are more than happy to go to battle with him every game.
But if the Niners are to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl, Garoppolo simply cannot turn the ball over the way he has. His carelessness with the football is one reason the team drafted rookie quarterback Trey Lance to take over when the time is right.
No one knows exactly when that time will be.
For now, the Niners are counting on Garoppolo to play the best ball of his career, and he alone may determine when and how San Francisco’s season ends.
