49ers Opponent No. 1: Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears are a mess. At least they admitted it by firing head coach Matt Nagy and general manager Ryan Pace, moves that were almost predetermined at the halfway point of the regular season.

Forget the fact this will be a road game for the 49ers. Unless Chicago lands the head coach of head coaches, whoever that might be, and brings aboard a swarm of talent on both sides of the ball, including more pass-catching talent for the soon-to-be second-year pro quarterback, Justin Fields, 2022 will shape up to be yet another year of frustration for the Bears under nearly every circumstance.

It’s not good news for Fields either, as he’ll have to undergo yet more learning of another offensive system after being asked to shoulder the burden of operating under Nagy for the bulk of 2021.

As Niners fans can recall back from the 2000s’ handling of then-quarterback Alex Smith, a constant shuffling of offensive play-callers on a year-to-year basis can be disastrous for any young signal-caller’s development.

If Chicago’s rebuild goes well, it’ll still probably be at least a full year or two before the Bears get back to being competitive, and that’s also highly contingent upon Fields turning into form, too.

San Francisco can feel good about having Chicago on the 2022 NFL schedule.
