No. 2: Cowboys CB Trevon Diggs would love to pick off Jimmy Garoppolo

At least Jimmy Garoppolo somewhat bucked the trend, the one where the 49ers lose if he throws an interception, in Week 18 against Los Angeles.

The Niners pulled off the victory despite Jimmy G’s two interceptions. But that still doesn’t change the fact they’re 2-6 in games where Garoppolo has thrown a pick, compared to 7-0 this season when he’s protected the ball.

San Francisco’s quarterback might be wise then to avoid passing to whichever side second-year Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs is covering.

Diggs, surely a dark-horse candidate for 2021 Defensive Player of the Year, led the league with 11 interceptions, returning two of them for touchdowns, and his play is a massive reason why Dallas’ defense has experienced such a remarkable turnaround this season.

Over the course of the regular season, opposing quarterbacks targeting Diggs have completed just 52.4 percent of their passes with a lowly 55.8 passer rating in the process.

Those aren’t necessarily great odds for Garoppolo, meaning he’d be much better off exploring other areas of the field where the Cowboys lack as much pass-covering fortitude.
