No. 4: ‘How ’bout them Cowboys?’

Too bad the 1972 playoff debacle wasn’t the only painful 49ers postseason defeat at the hands of Dallas.

During the early and mid 1990s, perhaps partially due to players like Charles Haley leaving, the Cowboys began to get the Niners’ number on a seemingly year-to-year basis, and the 1993 NFC Championship would prove to be yet another one of those games San Francisco fans would like to forget.

It was a classic, sure, as both teams were tied at 10 apiece after halftime. And while Dallas took an early fourth-quarter lead, quarterback Steve Young was able to engineer a go-ahead 49ers drive that made it 24-20 on a 5-yard touchdown pass to Jerry Rice.

Until Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman sunk the dagger into Niners fans’ hearts with a Dallas go-ahead touchdown.

Head coach Jimmy Johnson, celebrating at Candlestick Park in the visiting locker room, made his infamous “how ’bout them Cowboys” cheer that still resonates with Dallas fans to this day.

San Francisco fans still hate hearing that to this day, too.
