49ers New Years Resolution No. 4: No more neglecting the cornerback room

In 2019, San Francisco knew it had to find a young prospect to eventually replace then-cornerback Richard Sherman at some point. The solution? A sixth-round draft pick on oft-injured Virginia corner Tim Harris, who is no longer on the roster.

In 2020, the 49ers entirely neglected the cornerback room in the draft, instead getting quality production from oft-injured veteran Jason Verrett and the occasional appearance from Sherman.

Yet the Niners banked on Verrett staying healthy in 2021, parted ways with Sherman and hoped fellow veteran corner Josh Norman could provide a free-agent boost, all done in tandem with drafting two less-known cornerbacks in Rounds 3 and 5, Ambry Thomas and Deommodore Lenoir, respectively.

It’s too soon to state whether or not Thomas and/or Lenoir will pan out. Early results haven’t exactly been promising, but San Francisco’s cornerback situation heading into 2022 isn’t good.

Norman probably won’t be back, and neither will Verrett. Nickel cornerback K’Waun Williams is a pending free agent, too.

If there’s a total New Years resolution the 49ers need to make in 2022, it’s that they won’t pass up on golden opportunities to reinforce this vital position.

On behalf of everyone here at Niner Noise, we hope your New Years resolutions come true and stay true.
