Power ranking Jimmy Garoppolo, other NFC West quarterbacks in Week 12
By Peter Panacy
No. 1: Matthew Stafford, Rams
Putting Jimmy Garoppolo ahead of Matthew Stafford on this entering Week 12 might be a little bit too big of a stretch, even though Stafford’s last two outings have been notably bad.
Including his efforts against Garoppolo and the Niners two weeks ago that saw Stafford go 26-of-41 for 243 yards, a touchdown against two interceptions and a 67.4 passer rating, his lowest of the season.
That came on the tail of yet another ugly showing against the visiting Tennessee Titans, which resulted in another Los Angeles loss, the two defeats prompting all kinds of questions about the Rams’ legitimacy as a Super Bowl contender as they hit their bye week in Week 11.
But is that a big enough reason to drop Stafford out of the No. 1 spot? No.
If Stafford struggles again after Los Angeles’ bye week, then we can call into question whether or not he’s the best quarterback within the division. Even with the back-to-back losses, Stafford is still in the top 10 for both passer rating (106.1) and completion percentage (67.7), third in passing touchdowns (24) and passing yards (3,014) and, unlike Kyler Murray, hasn’t been impacted by the injury bug this season. At least not yet.
And LA is still a powerhouse team, likely having just gone through a two-game stretch of lesser-than-expected performances, not a complete meltdown.
Unless the recent trend continues, and it shouldn’t be expected to be that way, Stafford stays at No. 1 on this list.
