Power ranking Jimmy Garoppolo, other NFC West quarterbacks in Week 12
By Peter Panacy
No. 4: Colt McCoy, Cardinals
Perhaps Jimmy Garoppolo and the 49ers shouldn’t feel too bad about losing to backup quarterback Colt McCoy and the Cardinals back in Week 9. Turns out, that’s becoming something of an NFC West trend as of late.
Granted, McCoy shouldn’t even be here, and the ideal run of divisional quarterbacking power rankings would probably leave him entirely off the list, as he wasn’t expected to take any meaningful snaps over Kyler Murray.
But McCoy has three starts now, helping Arizona to a 2-1 record during that span, including victories over the Niners and Seahawks.

Backup quarterbacks are typically expected to navigate a game or two, hopefully delivering an unexpected victory and little more than that. McCoy has come through big in Murray’s absence in two of the last three games, helping ensure the Cardinals stay not only at the very top of the NFC West but in the entire NFC playoff picture altogether.
We won’t overthink this, of course. He’s a backup and will revert to the No. 2 option once Murray returns.
Still, Arizona has to be thankful McCoy has played so well as of late.
