No. 2: Kyle Shanahan won’t bench Jimmy Garoppolo anytime soon

It wasn’t long ago fans were clamoring for rookie quarterback Trey Lance to finally get the nod as the starter over Jimmy Garoppolo.

Well, it doesn’t look like that’ll take place in the near future. Perhaps not at all for the rest of the season.

Week 11 marked the fourth game in a row where Garoppolo has played well, and he’s tossed just one interception during that stretch back in Week 9 when the 49ers fell victim to the Cardinals. Yet Garoppolo wasn’t the reason the Niners lost that game, and he’s also tossed a total of six touchdowns over those last four games, too.

Including two against Jacksonville despite missing a golden opportunity at the end of San Francisco’s first offensive possession.

Garoppolo finished the game with good, not-terrific stats — 16-of-22 for 176 yards, the two touchdowns against zero interceptions for a 126.3 passer rating. But that’s the kind of play the 49ers needed to win against a lowly opponent like the Jaguars.

As long as he continues to play that way, and especially if the Niners are winning, Lance’s field time will be limited to garbage-time snaps like they were late in the fourth quarter.
