49ers game grades from deflating Week 9 loss to Cardinals
By Peter Panacy
49ers Quarterback
Jimmy Garoppolo didn’t cost the Niners the game. If it weren’t for the turnovers and the lack of thump from San Francisco’s defense, Week 9 could have almost gone down as one of Jimmy G’s better performances in a 49ers uniform as of late.
True, Garoppolo tossed a late fourth-quarter interception, adding on to the three lost turnovers the team had on Sunday. Not good. But it wasn’t a difference-maker at that point anyway.
Overall, Garoppolo’s line was solid enough with him going 28-of-40 for 326 yards, two passing touchdowns split between George Kittle and Brandon Aiyuk against the one interception late in the game.
All this for a solid passer rating of 100.6.
Garoppolo, despite the devastating defeat, might have staved off Kyle Shanahan making the inevitable switch to rookie quarterback Trey Lance for at least another week.
But the whole aura of “Jimmy G wins” needs to go away. He’s not that difference-maker anymore and hasn’t been for some time.
