49ers Dud: Wide Receiver Trent Sherfield
After the 49ers’ victory over the Detroit Lions in Week 1, wide receiver Trent Sherfield saw a 48-percent snap share and looked to be the Niners’ wide receiver No. 3.
Since then, Sherfield hasn’t played over 30 percent of the snaps, and on Sunday, he played a total of seven.
Sherfield was the talk of 49ers training camp in the offseason and showcased his abilities in the preseason, catching rookie quarterback Trey Lance’s first NFL touchdown.
But none of that has transitioned into the regular season. Veteran wideout Mohamed Sanu still runs in front of him with Travis Benjamin being around as well. Additionally, second-year pro Jauan Jennings still seems to grace the field as much as Sherfield.
It seems the more Brandon Aiyuk plays, the less Sherfield does, but when there are three wideouts on the field, Sherfield should be that third guy.
With little opportunity, Sherfield has shown that he can make plays and has sure hands. The others rotating in that No. 3 wide receiver spot leave much to be desired, and Sherfield should see the field more moving forward.
