49ers Loser: Right Tackle Mike McGlinchey

On the surface, right tackle Mike McGlinchey has almost nothing to do with the 49ers’ own actions and inactions at the NFL trade deadline.

But he is impacted by another key move within the NFC West.

The Rams’ pickup of Von Miller surely tips the balance of power within the division much more heavily in favor of Los Angeles, and Miller pairing with All-Pro defensive tackle Aaron Donald sure makes the Rams’ own defensive line just as formidable as that of the Niners, if not more so.

San Francisco has yet to play Los Angeles this season, and it’s highly likely the Rams look to field Miller opposite McGlinchey instead of left tackle Trent Williams, whose pass-blocking skills are still among the NFL’s best in 2021.

In contrast, McGlinchey has been credited with surrendering two sacks and a notable 13 quarterback pressures this season, according to Pro Football Focus, despite showing some modest improvement in pass protection compared to a year ago.

Preferably, Denver would have chosen another team outside the NFC West as a partner for Miller’s services.

McGlinchey likely would have been happier with that instead of Miller going to LA.
