Bully or bullied: Mike McGlinchey

Right tackle Mike McGlinchey was selected in the 2018 NFL Draft to anchor the right side of the offensive line for the long run. McGlinchey hailed out of the University of Notre Dame, which over the last several years, produced several top-rated offensive linemen. McGlinchey came billed as a prospect who excelled in the run game and could hold his own as a pass blocker.

Nevertheless, in college, McGlinchey was a better run blocker than a pass blocker. This disparity was supposed to be erased as McGlinchey continued to develop, but he wouldn’t be discussed in this article if he had. Instead, McGlinchey has been exactly the same player as he was before being drafted.

Unfortunately, it appears that his pass blocking ability is declining. Through five weeks of football, McGlinchey has been a constant source of holding penalties and blown protection.

If the 49ers are going to make a playoff run, McGlinchey will need to finally take the next step and stonewall opposing defenders in both the run and passing game.
