Trey Lance: Ranking 49ers QB against other rookies entering Week 6
By Peter Panacy
No. 5: Davis Mills, Houston Texans
We didn’t rank Houston Texans quarterback Davis Mills last time, namely because he wasn’t anywhere close to being a high-profile rookie quarterback, and the thought was first-year head coach David Culley would revert back to the veteran, Tyrod Taylor, as soon as the latter returned from injury.
Not unlike what many speculate the 49ers will do from Trey Lance back to Jimmy Garoppolo.
At any rate, though, Mills has at least shown some modest competence for a player selected in the third round of this year’s NFL Draft, going 21-of-29 for 312 yards, three touchdowns against zero interceptions with a 141.7 passer rating in Houston’s Week 5 loss to the New England Patriots.
After what the Pats did previously to Zach Wilson, it’s pretty easy to list Mills higher.
That said, Mills isn’t asked to do much in the Texans offense, and it’s likely he’s not going to suddenly turn into the end-all, be-all answer for Houston under center.
