49ers Cornerback Ambry Thomas

With the running game rolling and the defensive line providing pressure, the jobs of the starting cornerbacks are made dramatically easier to execute. Like Trey Sermon, rookie cornerback Ambry Thomas was expected to provide quality depth with the potential to compete for a starting job.

And, like Trey Sermon, Thomas has underperformed so far despite the opportunity to start right now. Instead, fifth-round rookie Deommodore Lenoir has started over Thomas, who found himself inactive after Week 1.

Lenoir, however, lacks the deep speed to consistently challenge fast wide receivers. Ideally, Lenoir should play as a nickel cornerback or at least against slower outside wideouts. Thomas was drafted to play on the perimeter because he has the speed to play the position.

Hot Read: Are 49ers true contenders in 2021 or just pretenders?

Thomas has the opportunity to play right now given he can prove to be a competent player. He has the athletic tools and experience to contribute but doesn’t have to play like a star.

Assuming the run game is keeping the defense fresh and the defensive line is getting to the quarterback, Thomas should be able to hold his own.

With these three players producing, the team will be playing solid football. But, if the next two players can provide more, the team will once again sit atop the NFL’s power rankings.
