49ers Trade Target No. 2: RB Matt Breida, Bills
Yes, another would-be San Francisco reunion at running back.
Current Buffalo Bills running back Matt Breida‘s unceremonious departure from the 49ers in 2020 stemmed from whatever reasons he fell out of favor with head coach Kyle Shanahan the previous year.
That said, just like Wayne Gallman and even to a larger extent, Breida is more than familiar with Shanahan’s offense and has even had elongated success within it, managing 814 and 623 rush yards in 2018 and 2019, respectively.
At 26 years old, Breida is still young enough and has plenty of proverbial “tread on the tires” left. The only problem for him now is the fact he, too, is buried on his team’s depth chart, looking up at fellow Bills running backs like Devin Singletary and Zack Moss, while also staving off Taiwan Jones for any remaining touches.
It’s likely Buffalo won’t have any issues accepting a seventh-round pick from the Niners in exchange for a player who has already had success within Shanahan’s offense. Plus, making this kind of move would add a speedy player with veteran’s prowess, aiding the primarily inexperienced crop of Trey Sermon, Elijah Mitchell and JaMycal Hasty.
An easy move. And given the attrition San Francisco is already experiencing at the position, one that wouldn’t be tough to execute at all.
