49ers fantasy football sit ’em: Wide receiver Trent Sherfield

Maybe you were impressed enough with wide receiver Trent Sherfield’s awesome preseason performance that netted him 156 yards on five catches with a touchdown over three games to the point where you felt adding him as a depth wideout in deeper leagues was worth some weight.

That should be a long-term transaction, though, and viewed as little more than a handcuff if you grabbed either Deebo Samuel or Brandon Aiyuk to round out your receiving room.

True, Sherfield showed some serious chemistry with both Niners quarterbacks, Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance, and that could have a good deal of fantasy value over the course of the year. Added to the fact the Lions aren’t projected to have an elite secondary this season, one could make the argument Sherfield could be a sleeper start.

It’s probably best to avoid that temptation, however.

Sherfield needs to showcase his ability to transfer his preseason success over to the regular season, and the sheer number of targets his way will be cut into by players like Aiyuk, Samuel and George Kittle, all of whom were awfully limited in the preseason.

Stash Sherfield if you want, but it’s best to start other options.
