No. 3: Former 49ers Safety Adrian Colbert

While a lot of flamed-out former 49ers draft picks tend to earn the ire of the fanbase, one player who never receives such criticism is safety Adrian Colbert, the team’s final selection of the 2017 NFL Draft.

Probably because Colbert had such a strong finish to his rookie season, which resulted in him being named the team’s starting safety a year later, and that’s notably unusual for a seventh-round pick.

Colbert didn’t last, though, and has gone through his share of different teams since the Niners let him go in early 2019. His latest stint with the New England Patriots only lasted through the preseason, and one particular touchdown allowed against the New York Giants (ironically against his former San Francisco teammate, tight end Kaden Smith), prompted Colbert to at least have some fun with the play:

It’s anyone’s guess whether or not that one play forced head coach Bill Belichick’s hand to let go of Colbert, who’ll now seek an opportunity on what’ll be his seventh team over a still-young career.

Hopefully so. Colbert is still a 49ers fan favorite.
