49ers Waiver-Wire Target No. 1: Cornerback Jimmy Moreland
Going back to the theme of cornerbacks, particularly those who can play nickel, it certainly wouldn’t be a painful idea to go after former Washington Football Team cornerback Jimmy Moreland, who flashed some promise over the last two seasons amid six starts, registering five pass breakups and an interception.

On paper, the 49ers could feasibly look at one of their two rookies, Deommodore Lenoir or Ambry Thomas, to provide immediate support at nickel for the veteran, K’Waun Williams.
But asking a rookie, even someone who impressed this preseason like Lenoir, to step in right away in relief of Williams, should the latter suffer a lengthy injury, might be a bit of a tall task.
Especially within the pass-heavy context of the NFC West.
Moreland would be aided, much like he was in Washington, by a stout Niners pass rush, taking pressure off of him to press his receivers and play physical.
And if it came at the cost of one of San Francisco’s back-end roster options, it wouldn’t be a bad idea whatsoever.
The 49ers and the rest of the NFL have until Wednesday, Sept. 1 at 4 p.m. ET to make claims before all unclaimed players become free agents.
