49ers Rookie Power Rankings: No. 4

49ers Running Back Trey Sermon

Judging solely on the reports coming out of training camp, Trey Sermon should easily be ranked higher on this list.

The third-round selection out of Ohio State sure looked like he’d be the perfect complementary weapon to Raheem Mostert, possibly even emerging as the starter in the immediate future. Sermon, despite being nowhere as fast as Mostert, still had the natural fit in a zone-style scheme and was making plenty of headway during camp.

But Sermon’s NFL debut in preseason Week 1 against the Chiefs wasn’t overly impressive, although a makeshift Niners offensive line in front of him wasn’t doing the rookie many favors.

Still, Sermon managed just 26 yards on nine carries for a lowly 2.9 yards per attempt.

To decrease Sermon’s stock a bit, he ended up suffering an injury that kept him out of the Niners’ second preseason game.

Sermon’s role is still awfully important, though, and he’ll remain a vital component of the offense as long as he stays healthy.
