No. 2: 49ers want to do right by Jimmy Garoppolo anyway

In all honesty, Jimmy Garoppolo has plenty of reasons to be content with the 49ers right now. A full 26.4 million of them.

It does shed light, however, on the fact the NFL is a business, and business decisions always end up coming to the forefront at some point or another.

Looking at Kyle Shanahan’s multitude of offseason comments and dissecting the rumors that linked the Niners to a variety of quarterbacks over the past few months, however, it shouldn’t be a secret the team actively wants to move on from Jimmy G. And if anyone doubts that, San Francisco made it perfectly clear by trading up for Trey Lance.

That’s the only evidence you need.

Still, Garoppolo remains a well-respected member of the locker room. Going down the list, there’s no shortage of players who actively endorse him as a leader, most notably tight end George Kittle.

Many of those same players, including Kittle, are certainly excited about Lance’s prospects, though. And that’s fine.

But the 49ers should be careful here and make sure they’re giving whatever necessary chances for Garoppolo to succeed.

Both now and wherever he goes next.

Simply put, if Lance isn’t quite ready and Garoppolo is the best option, doing right by Jimmy G would be letting him start.
