Jimmy Garoppolo was in awe of 49ers rookie QB Trey Lance after his 80-yard touchdown on Saturday.

Without a doubt, the highlight of the first preseason game for the San Francisco 49ers was the 80-yard bomb from rookie quarterback Trey Lance to wide receiver Trent Sherfield.

A highlight some fans may not be aware of was how Jimmy Garoppolo reacted to it.

Lance’s first pass was a beautiful play where he extended his time in the pocket with his legs before rolling out to the right and hitting receiver Brandon Aiyuk right in between the numbers.

It was a brilliant play, except for the fact Aiyuk shockingly dropped it, robbing Lance of the perfect start. To call it anticlimactic would be like calling a monsoon just a spot of rain. Technically accurate, but not really accurately depicting what it actually was.

Many rookie quarterbacks could be forgiven for withdrawing into their shell in disappointment, but not Lance.

Lance’s reaction was simply to shrug it off, and unleash a perfect bomb with his second throw that sent Levi’s Stadium into a frenzy:

You really can’t ask for a better pass than that. Lance rolled left on the play-action play, while Sherfield streaked down the field and then broke out right. Lance hit him perfectly in stride and then nobody was going to catch Sherfield down the sideline.

Lance struggled a bit to finish the half and will have things to work on, but no doubt the touchdown pass is what everybody will remember.

It wasn’t just the fans that were sent into a frenzy either. Garoppolo, who started the game and got one series before giving way to Lance, personified the reactions of 49ers fans everywhere with a hilarious photo of him in utter raptures over the play, caught by our friends over at 49ers Webzone:

The relationship between Garoppolo and Lance has been a friendly and professional one, not necessarily the easiest thing in the world when your job is essentially on a countdown until Lance is given the keys to the franchise.

And for that photo, you can see exactly how Garoppolo feels whenever the rookie does something electric on the field.

Lance’s ceiling is higher than Garoppolo’s, but Garoppolo’s floor is higher than Lance right now.

Garoppolo is still the starter.

But let’s hope we’ll get to see many more highlights from Lance this preseason, and many more photos of Garoppolo getting hyped up over it.
