49ers Bubble Watch: Safety

Lock: Jimmie Ward, Talanoa Hufanga, Tavon Wilson

Strong Bubble: Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, Marcell Harris

Weak Bubble: Jared Mayden, Jaquiski Tartt

Long Shot: Kai Nacua, Tarvarius Moore, Tony Jefferson

Ha Ha Clinton-Dix has a shot to be a regular starter in place of Jaquiski Tartt, who likely starts the regular season on an injury list and won’t count against the 53-man roster.

Same with Tarvarius Moore, who suffered an Achilles tear and won’t return anytime soon. Tony Jefferson, meanwhile, landed on injured reserve with groin injuries.

But of the three veterans who could potentially take over for Tartt at strong safety, Tavon Wilson has made the biggest impression during training camp. Even if he loses out on a starting bid, Wilson’s prowess on special teams seems to indicate he’s a lock to survive roster cuts.

Same with the rookie, Talanoa Hufanga, who is also making strides towards advancing through to the first-team group.

Marcell Harris has been working out with the linebackers during camp, which might play to his strengths as a run stopper since his pass-coverage skills have been lacking over the past three years. Whether or not this will be enough to make the 53-man roster, though, is anyone’s guess. As a safety, it’ll be hard for him to stick around.
