No. 3: Don’t expect to see Jimmy Garoppolo play past Week 8

Jimmy Garoppolo’s future with the 49ers will be determined within the first eight weeks of the season. Whether it’s because of performance, trade value, or rookie quarterback Trey Lance ready to take over, Garoppolo will more than likely determine where he plays to end 2021.

San Francisco’s first half is relatively winnable. With dates against the Detroit Lions, Philadelphia Eagles, and Indianapolis Colts, Garoppolo should be able to pull out wins in each of these games.

Three straight games against NFC/NFC West opponents before the bye week will be the true test. The home opener against the Packers could be an easy win with the Packers organization in flux due to offseason distractions.

And, winning at least one against the Seattle Seahawks and Cardinals is crucial for playoff positioning.

However, if Garoppolo plays terribly in those games you have to imagine 49ers general manager John Lynch will be ringing up every single general manager in the league to make a move.

Teams who may be interested in Garoppolo’s services could be but are not limited to, the Packers, Houston Texans, and New England Patriots. All three teams currently have quarterback questions and should be keeping an eye on the 49ers’ situation as the trade deadline approaches.

Ideally, the 49ers are 8-0 at the deadline and don’t have to make any decisions.

But do expect to see Garoppolo on the move before November.
