Quarterback No. 1: Jimmy Garoppolo

Jimmy Garoppolo remains the top quarterback for the 49ers, but the question remains exactly how long he stays as the top quarterback for the team. Everyone knows that Garoppolo is on borrowed time at San Francisco. Trey Lance is the future, so 2021 is essentially an audition tape for the rest of the NFL so he can find a new job in 2022 and beyond.

Garoppolo has his limitations, but he’s also been the quarterback when the 49ers made it to the Super Bowl. There’s a big floor, but there’s also a big ceiling for the team. But if Lance comes along quicker than expected, Garoppolo knows that for the first time in his 49ers career that his spot as the starter could be permanently snuffed out sooner rather than later.

The 49ers have given him support. He has an array of young talent at running back and wide receiver, a great weapon at tight end in George Kittle and he has a top offensive line which has had talented added to with rookie guard Aaron Banks and veteran center Alex Mack.

The rest is up to him. His tenure as the starter has an expiration date, but that doesn’t mean his career has to as well.
