49ers training camp: 4 players with most to lose entering 2021
By Peter Panacy
No. 2: 49ers Quarterback Josh Rosen
While quarterback Josh Rosen isn’t the only signal-caller on this list of Niners players with a lot on the line entering training camp, he might be the only one of the bunch looking at a potential end to his otherwise disappointing career.
After flaming out in 2018 with the team that drafted him No. 10 overall in that year’s draft, the Arizona Cardinals, Rosen has since had less-than-stellar efforts with the Miami Dolphins and Tampa Bay Buccaneers before being a San Francisco emergency addition late in 2020.
Yes, there is a scenario where Rosen could potentially find something of a long-term home with the 49ers, namely dependent on what happens to the next player on this list.
But the stark reality is Rosen is essentially playing for his NFL future.
True, he’s only 24 years old. Yet it’s hard to envision too many other teams being overly interested in a player who hasn’t come close to cutting it on three separate teams up to this point.
Particularly if he loses out to one of the other backup candidates on the Niners’ quarterbacking depth chart, Nate Sudfeld.
While Rosen will likely never recapture the hype he had entering his rookie season, his best chance at hanging around in the league a while longer will hinge largely on how well he performs during training camp.
