No. 3: 49ers Offensive Lineman Jaylon Moore

Admittedly, there’s a lot to like about one of the 49ers’ three picks in Round 5 of the NFL Draft, former Western Michigan offensive lineman Jaylon Moore.

A three-year starter at tackle, Moore is expected to bump inside to guard at the pro level but still possesses the experience to play on the outside. Additionally, Western Michigan featured a primarily outside-zone style of system, which makes Moore a tailored fit in head coach Kyle Shanahan’s offense.

The challenge for Moore, though, is there’s an awfully large number of reasonably qualified backups on the Niners roster to support a cast of starters up front.

Right guard candidates, Aaron Banks and Daniel Brunskill, will battle it out for a starting job, pushing the other into a primary reserve role. And while returnees like Tom Compton and Colton McKivitz struggled in fill-in duties last year, both could essentially steal a roster spot, too.

Same with backup linemen like Shon Coleman and Senio Kelemete, who both have extensive starting experience.

Recency bias works in Moore’s favor, both from the fanbase and likely from the coaching staff, too. Yet it doesn’t take much to see that Moore has more than just a handful of players he’ll need to outwork and outperform during training camp and the preseason to survive roster cuts later this summer.
