No. 3 Fantasy Football Bust to Avoid: RB James Robinson, Jaguars

It’s so easy to get caught up in the hype surrounding a second-year player like Jaguars running back James Robinson, who seemingly came out of nowhere in 2020 and managed over 1,000 yards rushing, a PPR dream of 49 receptions for over 340 yards and a net 10 touchdowns.

For those fantasy football owners who grabbed him up last season, you were well rewarded.

Yet there are going to be plenty of Robinson owners this year who end up being disappointed, especially if they’re falling in line with his 4.05 ADP.

For starters, it’s always risky to assume a player fits in with a new head coach, especially Urban Meyer, who brought it his old Ohio State protege in veteran running back Carlos Hyde this offseason. Tack on the addition of Trevor Lawrence’s teammate at Clemson, rookie running back Travis Etienne, in Round 1 of this year’s draft, and it’s hard to avoid seeing why Robinson is likely to see far fewer touches this season than last.

Meyer is going to give Hyde a lot of looks. That’s understood. And the Jaguars have much more invested in Etienne, too, meaning Robinson could easily be relegated to the No. 3 spot on the depth chart in a matter of weeks.

Not good value for fantasy football owners who reach on Robinson as an RB1 or RB2.
