49ers Wide Receivers

WR1 (X receiver) Brandon Aiyuk

WR2 (Z receiver) Deebo Samuel

WR3 (Slot Receiver) Mohamed Sanu

There is no debate for the 49ers’ top two receiver spots on the depth chart. Brandon Aiyuk is the nominal WR1, given his prototypical build, while Deebo Samuel is the WR2, but together they are the obvious starters.

Both will be looking for increased development in the coming year.

The real debate comes from who will take the mantle as WR3 and primary slot receiver. Following the departure of Kendrick Bourne, there is a host of opportunity. If Jalen Hurd can prove himself healthy, he has the most talent of anyone vying for the spot. Richie James Jr. has shown flashes before. Jauan Jennings and Austin Watkins Jr. are both unproven, but Jennings in particular had successful OTAs.

However, Mohamed Sanu offers the 49ers reliability they seem to value at that third WR position, he’s a tested wily veteran, and he’s had extensive practice with Trey Lance outside the facility.

While any of the receivers mentioned can grab the role, early indicators would seem to show it’s Sanu’s position to lose.
