No. 3: 49ers can bring back Richard Sherman

San Francisco’s secondary could easily end up being the primary defensive weak spot in 2021, namely with injury concerns for two starting cornerbacks, Jason Verrett and K’Waun Williams, as well as the two starting safeties, Jimmie Ward and Jaquiski Tartt.

Yes, the 49ers drafted three additional defensive backs — Ambry Thomas, Deommodore Lenoir and Talanoa Hufanga — but it’s important to acknowledge they’re all first-year players and haven’t proven anything at the NFL level yet.

There were some conversations the Niners could entertain a reunion with veteran cornerback Richard Sherman, who at 33 years old, is likely to want to sign with a contender and would probably prefer to stay on the West Coast.

Likely to have approximately $10 million in cap space to start training camp, San Francisco should be able to afford another incentive-laden deal for Sherman, which wouldn’t be unlike what he originally signed back in 2018.

Sure, Sherman might not be the same caliber player at this point of his career.

Yet his experience could do wonders for younger players like Thomas and Lenoir, and Sherman certainly can guard against some of those injury concerns the 49ers should be having right now.
