49ers Injury Risk No. 4: Safety Jaquiski Tartt

For whatever the reasons, although they’re all injury-related, the last four years haven’t been kind to strong safety Jaquiski Tartt.

Tartt clearly makes San Francisco’s defense better when he’s on the field. But the problem is Tartt hasn’t been on the field long enough to warrant long-term consideration as a player the 49ers want to keep around.

Perhaps only the lack of established starting-caliber options behind him on the depth chart prompted the Niners to re-sign him to a one-year deal earlier this offseason.

Tartt’s injury history is extensive. Of the last four years, 2019 marked the only time where he didn’t finish the season on injured reserve. Last year, a turf-toe injury prematurely ended his campaign. And in total, Tartt has missed a whopping 30 out of a possible 64 regular-season games.

Not good.

Having just turned 29 years old, it doesn’t seem likely Tartt will become a much more reliable player on the field even though San Francisco would otherwise need him to be.

At best, the 49ers can only hope Tartt’s 2021 campaign will stand in contrast to what has happened over the last four seasons.
