No. 2: Week 8 — 49ers at Bears

OK, so the same storyline could apply here with Trey Lance going up against another quarterback the 49ers were widely believed to land, Justin Fields. And by Week 8, there’s going to be the chance Lance has overtaken Jimmy Garoppolo on the depth chart, while the Chicago Bears’ hopes will be for Fields to unset the two veterans, Andy Dalton and Nick Folk, on his own rise to the top of the depth chart.

Possibly exciting? Absolutely.

Yet there’s more the wrinkle, namely with Garoppolo being from the Chicago area and having one more chance to put it to the team he grew up rooting for while still donning a Niners uniform.

The Bears could have possibly sought out Garoppolo’s services during the offseason, instead signing Dalton and then drafting Fields.

So much for a Jimmy G homecoming.

Either way, there’d be an added fold to the lengthy storyline between these two age-old NFL franchises, and fans on both sides would probably be clamoring for a bit more attention anyway when looking at the two rookies who are expected to take over both squads at some point sooner than later.
