SF 49ers bubble watch: Cornerback

Lock: Emmanuel Moseley, Jason Verrett, K’Waun Williams, Ambry Thomas*

Strong bubble: Dontae Johnson, Deommodore Lenoir*

Weak bubble: Tim Harris Jr., Ken Webster

Long shot: Briean Boddy-Calhoun, Mark Fields II*

San Francisco appears to have its starting trio of cornerbacks in place: Jason Verrett, Emmanuel Moseley and the nickel back, K’Waun Williams, but the depth behind them is very much for grabs. And if the SF 49ers decide to bring back the longtime veteran, Richard Sherman, the depth chart gets shaken up quite a bit more.

The Niners drafted two corners in this year’s draft, Michigan’s Ambry Thomas and Oregon’s Deommodore Lenoir, although neither figures to be starting material right away. Thomas, a third-round pick, is probably going to receive a bit more patience with his development than Lenoir, a Round 5 selection, hence why the latter is on the bubble a bit whereas Thomas isn’t.

After that, though, it’s almost anyone’s guess.

San Francisco probably elects to keep six cornerbacks on its 53-man roster, meaning the locks and strong-bubble players get the nod.

Even if that meant giving up on Tim Harris Jr., the SF 49ers’ final player selected in the 2019 NFL Draft, who has essentially been redshirted his first two years at the pro level.
