49ers worst pick: Trey Sermon, Running Back

Let be begin with a disclaimer: I do not hate running back Trey Sermon as a prospect. I see him as being the potential bell-cow back of San Francisco’s rotation, making way for the likes of Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson in third-down situation.

Having a back like Sermon in the rotation, especially with durability concerns with a lot of the other running backs, is very important.

But it begs the question on why the 49ers traded up to take a running back, when Kyle Shanahan is so adept at taking running backs from the scrapheap or undrafted rookie ranks and turning them into stars.

To be honest, there wasn’t truly a pick I hated at all in this draft class. They all fit some needs that required addressing. But trading up for a running back was puzzling.

I guess it doesn’t matter if he turns into the next Frank Gore, though.
