49ers NFL Draft: Biggest winners, losers from 2021
By Peter Panacy
Losers: 49ers O-linemen Tom Compton, Colton McKivitz and Justin Skule
Grabbing Aaron Banks and Jaylon Moore speaks measures about how San Francisco felt about its offensive line depth entering the draft.
Short story: not very good.
While the immediate effect of Banks’ drafting in Round 2 will ultimately push uber-offensive lineman Daniel Brunskill out of a starting spot, Brunskill’s versatility likely keeps him around as a high-quality backup, which is fine.
That said, the two rookie linemen create some serious doubt whether returning veterans like Tom Compton, Colton McKivitz and Justin Skule make the 53-man cut.
Compton and McKivitz regularly rotated at right guard last year when Brunskill was asked to bump over to center, and the prior two didn’t exactly net positive results. The 49ers could end up being a bit more patient with McKivitz, considering his rookie offseason didn’t have the benefit of minicamps or OTAs in light of the pandemic.
But that probably won’t end up being the case for Compton and Skule.
Either way, those three players have to be considered squarely on the roster bubble now, and it’s likely only one of them wind up making the cut this September.
