49ers roster: Predicting running back depth chart with Wayne Gallman

49ers running back depth chart
Despite adding Wayne Gallman, San Francisco’s running back room is actually less crowded now than it was a year ago shortly after the 2020 NFL Draft.
This is essentially due to the offseason losses of Tevin Coleman and Jerick McKinnon, of course, who held notable if not significant roles within Kyle Shanahan’s offense last year.
For now, this is what the 49ers’ running back depth chart looks like:
- Wayne Gallman
- JaMycal Hasty
- Raheem Mostert
- Austin Walter
- Jeff Wilson Jr.
Mostert solidified himself as RB1 late in 2019 even though Shanahan preferred to start Coleman, giving the latter opportunities to test out defenses before letting Mostert take full advantage later in games.
Yet Mostert’s recent injury history — he missed eight games in 2020 — prompted Shanahan to bolster the depth chart anyway.
Even if it meant fewer opportunities for Wilson to shine as he did in limited fashion during Mostert’s absences last year.
