49ers Target No. 2: Tommy Tremble, Notre Dame

George Kittle is clearly the best all-around tight end in the game today, while Jordan Reed was less a blocker and more of a receiving threat. Charlie Woerner, meanwhile, offers almost nothing in the receiving game but remains a solid run-blocker.

If the 49ers are looking at a good all-around tight end, while nowhere close to Kittle’s ilk but still effective enough, Notre Dame’s Tommy Tremble would be a good choice.

Tremble, 6-foot-3 and 241 pounds, almost looks like a fullback more than a tight end, and it wouldn’t be overly shocking to see a team deploy him as such. While the Niners already have a fullback in Kyle Juszczyk, Kyle Shanahan’s general switch to a “positionless” offense could suggest Tremble winds up being a versatile gadget-type weapon should San Francisco draft him.

Tremble only put up 401 receiving yards over two years at Notre Dame, boasting four touchdowns in 2019 before failing to find the end zone last year.

Part of this has been due to Tremble being a No. 2 option behind tight ends Cole Kmet and Michael Mayer the last two seasons, and it’s not a shock Tremble’s route-running skills haven’t been fully developed.

That said, he does offer a lot of potential in the receiving game with more than enough physicality and toughness to suggest he could be another yards-after-the-catch master.

Yet Tremble’s blocking prowess will be vital, as that’s almost a must-have trait for any depth tight end. Should the 49ers be looking at him as a late day-two pick or perhaps as someone worth targeting in Round 4, they’ll certainly appreciate his ability to dig into defenders to push them off guard.
